So you’ve begun making some big decisions about your new kitchen. The color of the cabinets, the countertops, maybe the wall color. You feel like you’re in the home stretch - until you realize you still have to decide the backsplash! Picking out all of the details for your kitchen can definitely be challenging - but fear not, we are here to help! Join us as we break down how to choose a backsplash.
What are the different backsplash types?
There are three main types of backsplashes: a traditional set-on backsplash, a tile backsplash, or a full height quartz backsplash.
Set on Backsplash
These are a very traditional style backsplash where (typically) a 4-inch portion of your countertop is set-on to the wall behind it. It prevents spills and messes from ending up entirely on your kitchen walls. As you can see in the picture below, this is a great way to finish your space. A 4-inch in backsplash is an extremely cost effective and traditional choice.
Tile Backsplash
Tile backsplashes have an entire world of possibilities. Depending on the color, size, pattern, and type of tile you choose - it can entirely transform your space. Just think of the difference between a white subway tile backsplash and the blue hexagons in the photo. The choice of tile could make the kitchen a relaxing neutral palette or rejuvenate the space with a vibrant pop of color. Based on your tile choices and preferences, this type of backsplash can be an extremely reserved and classic backsplash or a modern and vibrant piece of art. Because of the differences in choices, tile could be your most expensive backsplash choice or a cost effective option. It depends on the style and vibe you are looking for within your kitchen.
Full Height Quartz Backsplash
Full height quartz is a showstopper. This is a continuation of your countertops all the way to the bottom of your cabinets or your ceiling in one full slab. As you can imagine, this is a great way to make your kitchen elegant, refined, and memorable. Depending on how high your full height backsplashes go, this type has the potential of being high cost but it is a great way to create a unified and modern feel in your kitchen.
What is Best for You?
Now that we understand the different types of backsplashes - how do we decide which style to choose? First, I want you to ask yourself a few questions.
Are you a messy cook or do you have messy kids? A 4 inch backsplash only protects a small portion of your kitchen walls. Tile or full height quartz are definitely the first choices if you a backsplash you can easily wipe down with a washcloth and soap.
Do you like to hang utensils, spices, or artwork on your kitchen walls? If you answered yes to this question, you will want to pick the 4-inch backsplash. It is much more challenging to hang artwork or utensils on tile or quartz walls, so that may make your decision much easier.
What type of style are you leaning towards in your kitchen? Traditional kitchens typically have tile or 4-inch backsplashes while more modern or trendy kitchens can have either tile or full height quartz. Think about your cabinet choice, countertop color, and overall vibe of your kitchen to help you decide here.
What does your backsplash budget look like? If you are trying to stick closely to a budget for this renovation project, a 4-inch backsplash or a cost effective tile will give you the finished look in your kitchen without derailing your budget entirely.
